Description:

Put Your Oxygen Mask on First

There is a reason why that phrase is repeated on every flight.  If you cannot help yourself you cannot help others.  We immigration attorneys are fighting a real war for due process and basic human rights for all.  This takes a toll on us.  If we are not careful to take care of ourselves we will not be able to take care of our clients or families.  In the same way if we do not take care of our practices, our efforts will not bear fruit and those closest to us suffer.  The TX Chapter Fall Conference this year is in a great location (Costa Rica) and it has two goals in mind: self care and practice care.  Join us for more ideas on how to do those two things and relax a little while you are at it.

Program:

Put Your Own Oxygen Mask On Before Assisting Others!

There is a reason why that phrase is repeated on every flight.  If you cannot help yourself you cannot help others. We immigration attorneys are battle fatigued soldiers in the war for due process and basic human rights for all.  This takes a toll on us. If we do not take care of ourselves we will not be able to take care of our clients or families.

Friday, November 2

7:00-8:00 – Group yoga on the beach or running on the beach.

8:00-8:30 Registration

8:30-9:30 Identifying the Cracks – Stress, Secondary Trauma and Your Ethical Obligations

Our jobs are not easy especially in today’s immigration enforcement world.  It is a well documented fact that we as attorneys go suffer secondary trauma by listening to and dealing with clients’ traumas.  In addition, the stress that the current administration is putting on us and our practices only compounds that suffering. This panel will help identify the cracks and how to cope and deal with them in a healthy way.

  • Identifying the cracks
  • Secondary trauma
  • How to handle stress and trauma in an ethical way

9:30-10:30 Body and Mind – Ways to Be a Better Warrior

You can’t take care of others if you don’t take care of yourself.  This panel will help you to prioritize physical and mental health such as incorporating exercise into your day, nutrition and meal planning, and mindfulness both in and out of the workplace.

  • Nutrition, meal planning, and exercise
  • How to build a culture of self care in your workplace
  • What is mindfulness and how to practice it

10:30-10:45 Break

10:45-11:45 Planning for Success: How to remove barriers to achieve well being

Do you have a plan for where you will be personally and professionally in 5, 10, 20, 30 years?  Have you planned what you want to be said at your funeral? Are you just drifting and reacting to what life throws at you?  This panel will cover topics such as financial planning, succession planning, and career goals.

  • Life planning
  • Financial planning
  • Succession planning

11:45-1:00 Lunch

1:00-2:00 – Start with Why: Mission, Vision, Strategic Growth

Why do soldiers fight valiantly at a war?  They get little if no personal gain and stand to lose everything, including their lives.  The answer is because they believe in and rally around a higher ideal. In the same way, what drives a practice forward and gets team members energized and ready to fight is a higher ideal.  Finding the “why” puts the practice on the right path to meaning and growth.

  • Mission
  • Vision
  • Core values and firm culture
  • Strategic growth

2:00-3:00 – Systems, systems, systems: maximizing efficiency and therefore profit.

McDonald’s is not in the business of making hamburgers.  McDonald’s is in the business of making restaurants that make hamburgers.  That means McDonalds has created systems for everything that happens in one of those restaurants from how big the hamburger patties have to be (4.25 oz raw, 2.8 oz cooked) to what the exact water content on potatoes must be and how big they must be.  The reason is to put all processes on rails so anyone can be plugged in to run a process through. It is no different for a practice. If everything depends on you (i.e. you’re the only one that knows how things are done and where the paperclips are located) you don’t have a business, you have a job.  If that’s the case, get a job somewhere else and get rid of all the stress of owning a business. This panel will go over healthy systems in a practice and how to leverage technology to automate as much of those processes as possible.

  • Systematizing the practice
  • Automating systems and processes
  • Leveraging technology

3:00-3:15 – Break

3:15-4:15 – Getting paid.  Flat vs. hourly vs. both. Up front payment.  Golden opportunities.

Jay Foonberg of ABA fame says, “I’d rather not do the work and not get paid than do the work and not get paid.”  Doing great work and scoring wins is hard. You need to get paid for it. This panel will cover issues such as how to bill: flat vs. hourly vs. both and how to actually get paid.

  • Hourly vs. flat vs. both
  • Cash up front vs. in house payment plans vs. financing of fees through third parties
  • Golden opportunities
  • Financial systems with strong accountability built in.

4:15-5:15 – The right people make all the difference: hiring, managing and retaining the right people.

Hiring, managing, and retaining the right talent is the key to success of a practice.  A structured process in sourcing, screening and onboarding talent is the key to assembling a great team.

  • Creating a job scorecard
  • Sourcing and selecting the right candidate
  • Onboarding and training
  • Feedback and performance evaluations
  • Rewarding team members properly

Saturday, November 3rd

The activities on Saturday morning are optional and not eligible for CLE.  Our conference planners have previously organized similar panels like the ones on Friday and the overwhelming feedback from attendees has been a desire to have some of those techniques put into practice.  We are creating the opportunity to do so on Saturday morning from 7-12.

Yoga or run on the beach

Guided Meditation/Journaling

Guided life planning

Painting on the beach (canvases, paints, and brushes will be provided)

*The $50.00 late fee surcharge is required for registrations submitted after October 15, 2018.  Also, a $50 administration fee will apply to any request for refund. Requests for refunds will be honored only if made prior to October 20, 2018. Registration fees are non-refundable on or after October 21, 2018. Conference materials will be made available to any registrant who is unable to attend and who does not meet the cancellation deadline.
